FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONs
Scout & After-School Programs
What is The Hermitage?
According to Webster's, a "hermitage" is "a secluded residence or private retreat." The Hermitage is a National Historic Landmark and a historic house museum. The name dates back to the eighteenth century and reflects the house's original function as a country estate.
Wil my group get to see inside the historic house during our program?
Maybe. Please note that due to the educational objectives of our various programs, your group may not tour some of all of the interpretive spaces within The Hermitage itself. Programs that incorporate at least a partial tour of the historic house are Listening to the Past, Architecture, and Manners Tea Parties.
If our group doesn't have 20 members, can we bring siblings?
Unfortunately, due to the nature of our educational programs, we are unable to allow siblings to participate. This enables our educators to focus on meeting the needs, abilities, and interests of the Scout or after-school group as a whole.
How many adult chaperones can participate in the program?
Our program fee includes up to three adult chaperones. Additional adults must pay $5 each.
What about adults who don't want to participate in the program?
The Hermitage provides programs and services for a large number of audiences, and our facility spaces are limited. We are unable to accommodate adults who are not participating in the program inside the building. Parents waiting for their children are invited to sit on the porch of the Hermitage Education & Conference Center or enjoy the grounds and gardens. We also recommend having a cup of coffee at the diner next door.
What is the cancellation policy? What about inclement weather?
The Hermitage rarely closes because of snow. However, if you are unsure, call (973) 945-8404. A message will be posted by 7 a.m. If it is raining, we recommend dressing your group for the weather, but we will plan alternatives to outdoor activities.
Does The Hermitage offer other programs for kids and families?
Yes. We sponsor quarterly Family Days that include hands-on activities that allow parents and children of all ages to enjoy learning about history. Please contact the museum for more information.
