How to Volunteer

The Hermitage MuseumWe welcome your assistance in helping children and adults explore the past through the unique resources of the Hermitage Museum. You can volunteer on your own, with a friend, or as part of a group to which you belong. With your contribution of time and skills, the Hermitage Museum can accommodate the increasing numbers of visitors and expand our educational programming.
As a volunteer, you will gain new insights into the past and meet dynamic and interesting people. You will learn about architectural history, social history, and decorative arts and have a "behind the scenes" introduction to the operation of one of New Jersey's outstanding historic house museums.
The Hermitage Museum currently offers the following opportunities for volunteering:

Become a Docent (Tour Guide)

The Hermitage MuseumIf you enjoy interacting with people, are curious about American history, and want to help promote Bergen County's historic heritage, we invite you to become a volunteer docent/interpreter at the Hermitage Museum. Docents provide invaluable support to The Hermitage in its mission to promote a deeper understanding of history. Docents' duties include:

Hermitage docents lead an average of four tours per month. Engaging visitors from across the state and country is inspiring and fulfilling work. Becoming a docent also provides an opportunity to build a closer relationship with this important Bergen County historical resource and a better understanding of local and American history. The museum provides training; previous experience is helpful but not required.

For more information about volunteering as a docent at the Hermitage Museum and to find out about upcoming docent training programs, contact Education Coordinator Vanessa Hamilton at (201) 445-8311, ext. 103, or
