Make a Difference

Volunteer Opportunities

Volunteers are essential to bringing the Hermitage to life for our guests. Whether you’re greeting visitors at the gate, tending our beautiful gardens, or supporting behind the scenes, there’s a place for you here.

We welcome volunteers with specialized skills, carpentry, plumbing, marketing, social media, tech support, archival preservation, legal expertise, or any talent you’re willing to share. If you enjoy meaningful projects and working with a passionate team, we’d love to hear from you.

Check out the opportunities below, or contact us.

Event Helpers

Every cultural, educational, community, and fundraising program relies on dedicated volunteers to keep things running smoothly. From managing parking and guiding traffic to staffing the gift shop, serving snacks, and tidying up throughout the day, their support makes each event possible.

Gardeners

Whether you’re a seasoned gardener or just curious enough to dig in, we’d love to have you on board. Established in 2011, our beautifully curated Victorian gardens are lovingly maintained with help from the Bergen County Master Gardeners. Each week, we welcome volunteers to join us in planting, weeding, tending to seasonal blooms and share laughter along the way.

Join us Wednesdays, 10:00am–12 :00pm, drop in, lend a hand, and help things grow!

Docents

Our docents are the heartbeat of the Hermitage. As you provide tours of the house and grounds, you'll bring 250 years of history to life! Confidence with public speaking is key. Tell unforgettable stories of the families who once called this place home, from tales of everyday living to intrigue and triumph.

No experience, just curiosity.

Educators

We’re always seeking passionate educators to help expand our community outreach. Our programs explore engaging topics like colonial life and the Revolutionary War, Civil War-era technology including water mills and machines, and the elegance of Victorian times. Educators lead sessions tailored to K-12 students, scout troops, adult learners, senior communities, university groups, and non-traditional education audiences.

Help us build lasting connections through history, join our team of educators today!

Join a Committee

The Friends of the Hermitage, a 501(c)3 corporation,  relies on the dedication of our Trustees, members, volunteers and community to help maintain the historic John Rosencrantz House, home to our offices, and to fund utilities and minor repairs at The Hermitage Museum. While both buildings are state-owned and administratively part of Ringwood State Park, we are responsible for their daily upkeep and ongoing preservation.

If you are interested joining a committee or joining the Board, send an introductory email to [email protected].
